The mantra Amanda mentioned was "Om Mani Padme Hum". While the meaning of it is somewhat debated (it IS in Sanskrit after all), literally it translates to "praise to the jewel in the lotus". The Dalai Lama has said that it is the "most vast" of all the mantras, as it contains all of the teaching of the Buddha in one phrase. Here he is speaking about it:
